MedEquip4Kids is delighted to have provided six resuscitaires for the maternity unit at Furness General Hospital. The equipment will be used to support newborn babies who have difficulty breathing.

The resuscitaires were funded with the help of our long-standing supporters VINCI Construction UK, who are currently on site building the hospital’s new maternity unit.

Heidi Bowron at Furness, who is co-ordinating a major fundraising appeal for the new unit, says: “It’s fantastic to receive this money for six resuscitaires. Resuscitaires are used to help some newborns establish breathing. We will have 14 en-suite bays in the new maternity where mums-to-be will deliver their baby and then stay until discharged. Our aim is to have a wall mounted resuscitaire in each to give labouring mums extra peace of mind from the moment they first enter their room.”

“Infections of the central nervous system need urgent and appropriate treatment. Most laboratory methods can take from 24 to 48 hours for diagnosis of bacterial meningitis and three to seven days for diagnosis of viral meningitis or encephalitis. The new equipment will mean we can get results of these tests in around an hour. We’ll be able to inform the clinicians of a positive result, allowing targeted therapy and reassurance to the patients and families. Just as important is the reporting of negative results, which may enable treatment withdrawal and possibly a shorter hospital stay.”
