Eat well

Why do we need to eat every day? Because food is like fuel in a car - it gives us energy for all the things we want to do. And it helps us to grow! But is all food healthy? Let's see how much you know about healthy eating. See if you know what kind of food is good for you - and if you know why it's good or bad for you. There are five main groups of food. To have a balanced diet, you need to eat things from all the groups. But some food isn't very good for you if you eat too much of it, so we should only eat these things now and again.

  1. Bread, cereals and potatoes: these foods give you lots of energy
  2. Meat, fish, eggs, beans and nuts: these foods are full of protein, which helps build up your muscles and make you strong.
  3. Milk, cheese and yoghurt: these foods are full of calcium, which is important for strong bones and teeth.
  4. Fruit and vegetables: these are very good for you because they're packed full of vitamins. We'll talk more about these in a minute.
  5. Chocolate, crisps, fizzy drinks and cakes: these foods have lots of fat and sugar in them. It's okay to eat a little bit of fat and sugar, but fat and sugar can be bad for you if you eat too much of them. So they should only be for treats, just now and then.

5-a-day

Fruit and vegetables are good for us because they're full of vitamins, which help to keep our bodies working properly. Doctors say we should eat at least five helpings of fruit and vegetables every day. If you eat crisps or chocolate for lunch, think about what fruit or vegetables you could eat instead.

Breakfast

We all need to eat breakfast every morning. It will keep us going until lunchtime and we won't need to eat lots of sugary snacks.
