Blackburn Hospital - Breastpump (023)
The Maternity Unit at Blackburn delivers approximately 2,000 babies each year, with up to one in ten needing specialist or neo natal care.
Health conditions of the mother or baby can interfere with natural breastfeeding. Examples include chest and heart conditions, which mean the baby is too breathless to feed independently, and severe infections which cause lethargy. In all these situations a mother will need to express milk to ensure the supply does not dry up.
The expressed milk can then be saved until the baby is well enough, or used to tube feed the baby and ensure continued breastfeeding, which is particularly beneficial to sick or low birth weight babies.
