North Staffs - Home Monitoring (004)
Parents who have suffered a sudden and unexpected death of a baby often feel anxious when they have another baby. The “Care of the Next Infant” CONI programme aims to help parents work through some of their greatest fears. This is run in hospitals and community health centres and involves midwives, paediatricians, GPs and health visitors
Through the CONI project, parents can:
· Be trained to use pulse monitors under the supervision of a nursing team
· Use breathing monitors under the supervision of a nursing team.
· Keep a symptom diary to record their baby’s health
· Receive weekly home visits by their health visitor
· Monitor their baby’s growth
All of these are essential for the peace of mind for a family with a history of cot death. The University Hospital of North Staffordshire CONI / Home monitoring project, needs 10 Rad5 portable pulse monitors and 10 LNOP Neol Adhesive sensors.
These monitors provide early warning of any change to the baby’s breathing pattern or oxygen levels by sounding an alarm to alert parents. They are used in the home for any baby who:
· Is at risk from suffering a life threatening condition
· Has ongoing medical conditions
· Had a life threatening event
These monitors provide support and reassurance to parents which allows them to have their children at home. As they are being monitored, any problems will be highlighted early on.
The total cost of this project is £6,100. We have purchased 5 in February 2010 and will be purchasing the remaining 5 in April.
