Salford Royal - Breast pumps (113)

The Neo Natal Unit at Hope Hospital, Salford, is a busy regional centre, accepting premature and very sick babies from hospitals across the North West. The unit has 19 cots in total, nine of which are intensive care, and the remaining 10 High Dependency.   The unit can accept babies from as early as 23 weeks, and weighing as little as 450g.

For a number of reasons it is sometimes necessary for a mother to express milk. Health conditions of the mother or baby can interfere with natural breastfeeding. Examples include chest and heart conditions, which mean the baby is too breathless to feed independently, and severe infections which cause lethargy.   In all these situations a mother will need to express milk to ensure the supply does not dry up.

The expressed milk can then be saved until the baby is well enough, or used to tube feed the baby. Electric breast pumps are far more effective and easy to use than the hand-operated devices, helping mothers to ensure enough milk is expressed at a very stressful time. The model chosen complies with all infection control requirements, and is very robust and easy to use. Each pump will cost £550.00.

Two electric breast pumps will cost £1,100.

UPDATE:  The pumps were ordered in April 2009
