Scarborough Duke of Kent Hospital - Suction Pumps (112)

The Duke of Kent Hospital in Scarborough has a Children’s Outreach Team caring for children who have been discharged from the ward but still suffer from severe, sometimes life-threatening illness.

Children who need a tracheotomy (an airway inserted into the windpipe) need constant access to a suction pump to remove build-up of saliva. At present the hospital offers a large, mains powered machine to its patients, but newer, smaller models are now on the market which offer much more freedom and flexibility to children who need these machines.

We have pledged to provide four suction machines for use by children in Scarborough and North Yorkshire. The new machine is more discreet, quieter and more compact than the machines the NHS currently offer. Being battery operated and portable makes them far more suitable for children, who may be attending main stream schools or play groups in the community.

All the machines will be used by children in the Scarborough area, and will make a tremendous difference to the freedom and opportunities of children with severe health conditions.

Each pump will cost £350.00. We want to provide four, and with the canisters and accessories the total cost will be £1,652.00.

UPDATE:  All the pumps were delivered in March 2009
