Oldham End of Life Care Team - Equipment (104)

Oldham Children’s Community Nursing Team supports children with life-limiting illnesses, allowing them to remain in their own homes with their families.

We have been asked to provide suction machines to help children who need a tracheotomy (an airway inserted into the windpipe). These children need constant access to a suction pump to remove build-up of saliva. At present Oldham PCT offers a large, mains powered machine to its patients, but newer, smaller models are now on the market which offer much more freedom and flexibility to children who need these machines.

We will also provide respiration monitors to provide early warning of breathing difficulties, and pulse oximeters to measure oxygen levels in the blood.

All of this equipment will help to keep children with very serious illness at home for longer, and avoid traumatic and unnecessary hospital visits. The End of Life Care Team are committed to ensuring that the families’ last days together are as calm as possible, and that as much time as possible can be spent together.

The total cost of the equipment needed is £3,538.50. All equipment will be used in the Oldham area, and will remain the property of the Woodland Centre Community Team.

UPDATE:  All the equipment has now been ordered
