Macclesfield - Datex FM Light Monitor (095)

Macclesfield District General Hospital has a 22-bed Children’s Unit dealing with children with a wide range of medical and surgical needs. They have a Paediatric Intensive Care bed used for stabilising children needing intensive care, before they are transferred to one of the larger hospitals in Manchester. At times children can be on the unit for two days before they are transferred.

When a child suddenly deteriorates or is admitted in a very serious condition they must be monitored and stabilised until they can be transferred to one of the tertiary centres.   The Datex FM Monitor is a new device that combines monitoring and recording of ECG, Oxygen Saturation, CO2 levels, blood pressure and temperature.

By monitoring children in the most accurate, effective way possible, staff can react quickly to early warning signs of a problem and reduce life-threatening incidents. They can also begin treatment quicker and reduce the need for transfers, which can be dangerous and stressful for the families.

This particular monitor is smaller and more convenient than others that are available, and can easily be taken with the child when they are transferred to larger hospital sites.

The monitor will cost £9,202.00 and the ward estimates that 50 children each year will benefit from this equipment.

UPDATE:  This equipment was ordered in March 2009
