UPDATE: This equipment was provided in 2005
We have recently been approached by the Child Health Department of Fylde Primary Care Trust for help in providing 50 Enuresis Alarms. These lightweight devices work by encouraging children suffering from chronic bedwetting problems to recognise signals and therefore wake up during the night prior to urinating. MedEquip4Kids has provided a number of these items in the past, and they have proved hugely successful in treating the condition.
By enabling children to free themselves of the worry of wetting the bed these alarms have been shown to significantly improve quality of life. Solving this problem removes the trauma suffered through bedwetting, such as embarrassment, feelings of isolation and inadequacy, teasing and bullying by siblings and peers, and the pressure it puts on family relationships.
There are two different designs of alarms chosen, and community nursing staff will select the most appropriate for each child. The vibrating alarms will benefit teenagers who require a discreet method. This will also be useful for children who have hearing loss. The light emitting alarms will benefit special needs children who may be frightened by the noise or sensation of the other alarm. These alarms may also be used during the day as part of a toileting programme for children with specific problems.
Providing 50 of these items will allow up to 200 children per year to benefit from treatment. This will have a major impact on the lives of these children, in a way they can probably never fully express.
