Chorley & South Ribble Hospital - Treatment Room
UPDATE: The new treatment room opened in 2005 Chorley & South Ribble Hospital is a large hospital with a 24-hour Accident & Emergency Department accepting casualties from across South Lancashire. Last year the Unit treated over 46,000 casualties, of which 7,955 were children requiring treatment for minor injuries such as burns, scalds, sprains and non-life threatening illness. These children are at present treated in one of the existing treatment rooms, which they share with adults.
The hospital have asked us to transform an unused room adjacent to the paediatric waiting area to be a new treatment room specifically for children’s use. A&E Departments can be intimidating places for small children, particularly at busy times. A frightened child is harder to treat, because nurses find it harder to ask the child exactly where the pain is.
Medical staff can better relate to children in a fun and exciting environment. The overall experience that children have when in hospital can be vital to their willingness to receive treatment in the future. The new room will be designed to distract children while they are examined, using specialist medical items as well as toys and pictures.
The main feature of the room will be a state of the art child-friendly examination table in the shape of a dinosaur. There are also various accessories to complement the table, including a large bubble tube. The hospital have also arranged for a local sixth form college to add extra artwork to the walls.
Although these items do not fall into the remit of the NHS, emergency staff are convinced that making the hospital experience less daunting will help children to get the best health care possible.
The total cost of this project is £4,045.50
