Bury Fairfield - Syringe Pumps (058)

The Children’s Unit at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury cares for up to 22 children and babies at any one time, with a further 15 beds available for Day Case patients, who come in for minor surgery and other procedures and are discharged later that day.

The Children’s Unit is currently being improved and modernised to offer more services, and the priority is to improve the existing High Dependency Unit to ensure more children can be treated on site. This ensures that children can receive appropriate care more quickly, and reduces the need for unnecessary transfers of seriously ill children to other hospitals in the area.

We have agreed to provide five new Syringe Pumps for the Unit. These small digital devices are used to administer drugs through a drip in very precise quantities. They are needed on the unit to replace out-dated equipment which is not as accurate and not as reliable as the newer models.

When children and babies require medication it is vital to ensure that the quantity is exactly right. This Syringe Pump allows medical staff to be confident that exactly the required amount is being delivered, and therefore gives much greater peace of mind to family members. The new pumps will be used across the whole of the Children’s Unit, but they are most urgently needed in the HDU and Ward areas, where children are more likely to need intravenous drugs.

Each Syringe Pump will cost £1,722.00. We have pledged to replace five to ensure that the ward has the most up to date equipment for treating children and babies. The total cost will be £8,610.00

UPDATE:  This equipment was provided in March 2009
